The carp with seven hooks

The Charles River in Boston remains a B-quality water, despite numerous efforts to clean it over the past 3 or 4 decades. Nonetheless, abundant fish and birds live in it and on its shores. But man is encroaching evermore on their territory. The seven hooks lodged forever inside this large carp’s mouth illustrate our lack of concern for the Environment: what appears to be a casual, low-impact leisure activity, in reality has far reaching implications. Not only do these hooks probably make the carp’s life somewhat difficult (for eating; perhaps it suffers, …), but these hooks are of stainless steel that will remain in the bottom of the river for many decades, perhaps centuries.

Even our most innocuous activities have implications that we fail to foresee. And this is all the more true of industries, EVEN the ones labeled as “sustainable” or “renewable”'; this will be a recurring topic throughout this blog. Stay tuned or search
